If you would like to claim a Medicare rebate then yes, you will need a referral from your GP. To be able to claim a rebate, your GP must complete and lodge a GP Mental Health Plan. If you are not going to be claiming a Medicare rebate then you do not need a referral. The current Medicare rebate is $88.25.
No. The referral must be valid prior to the appointment to claim the rebate. However, it is not essential to obtain a GP referral if you do not wish to claim the rebate.
This depends on your financial situation. Reduced rates are available, by negotiation, for people with low incomes or who are currently on a Government pension. This can be discussed at, or prior to your initial appointment.
When you arrive for your first session, you will be asked to complete some initial paperwork. Informed consent will be discussed with you. A discussion about what brought you to make an appointment would be helpful in terms of establishing your goals and working out what approach might best work for you. This is done collaboratively as your opinion and insight are crucial. Sessions are 50 minutes. If you want to make a subsequent appointment, you will have the opportunity to do so.
